Hammerhead Shark

Here’s another enemy reveal! It’s a hammerhead shark with its eyes gouged out. Kinda creepy, huh? Well it’s even creepier when it opens its mouth to reveal a giant eyeball inside. I am perturbed.

Sea Anemone Design

Here are some sketches and the final design for the Sea Anemonemonenmene (I can never pronounce the bloody word). It will fire energy bursts out of its tentacles (that’s what anemonenenenenes do, right?) and will either be attached to the ground with a stalk or float ominously through the water.

In the world of “Seafoam Empress” sea anemones fire omni-directional energy projectiles. I bet clownfish in the real world are pretty jealous.

Seafoam Empress Logo!

Here’s the logo for our game! A pivotal moment indeed as it feels like the game finally has a face to it. That isn’t Athena’s face, at least. Although don’t you want to pinch those adorable mermaid cheeks?

Check out those sexy curves!

The Octopus in the Hat

We’re revealing another enemy: a giant octopus that jumps up and down with the intent of crushing our heroine.

This is a good example of form following function in enemy design. Why the giant eye? Eyes are popularly used in video games to communicate a weak point and this is where Athena can aim her deadly sea shells, if she’s willing to risk momentarily being underneath the enemy as it jumps (what goes up must come down after all). The tentacles serve to protect the eye on its sides. And why the giant top hat? We wanted to give a flat surface at the top that Athena could potentially walk on. And also, let’s face it — it’s pretty damn stylish.

This is what a giant-eyed giant octopus wearing a giant top hat looks like when it’s dancing the boogie-woogie.

It’s game over, man, game over!

Just like what Bill Paxton once said, sometimes games can be over and our heroes die. It is for that reason that I must go through the very heart-wrenching duty of animating Athena vanishing in a burst of energy, consumed by her own magic (which, to be fair, is a lot less gory and explosive a demise than some of her enemies).

Athena going out with a bang.

It’s a good thing we’ve already designed save points though (see below). How apropos!

Save Point Design

We have a design for the game’s save points! This very smug-looking fish stores Athena’s magic in these giant orbs, from which she’ll spawn when the player restarts the game.

Wouldn’t life be great if we had save points? I’d have used one right before I drank those tequila shots on my birthday recently…

Looking very sophisticated with that bubble pipe.

Hermit Crab Enemy

We also have a unique enemy, the Hermit Crab, whose shell can be used in the same vein as the Nautilus Shells if you manage to kill it (i.e. you can pick them up and hurl them at other enemies). Athena’s becoming a veritable shell-hurling badass, it would appear. Maybe she should compete in the Olympics. If shell-hurling were a thing. Which it should be. Starting a petition now.

Enemies Galore (and the Title Revealed!)

Hey everyone! It’s been a while since our last blog post, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy with our upcoming game, Seafoam Empress (We decided Athena the Valkyrie-Mermaid and her Froggy Steed might be too much of a mouthful).

We also wanted to take this opportunity to reveal some more enemies, as well as the concept sketches that led to their development.

The Crab Walker, which is a crab that (you guessed it) walks. They’ll be spotted scampering along seafloors, walls, ceilings, practically any surface!

fatfish_concept The Fatfish (har har). An obese, erudite catfish that has a penchant for getting in our heroine’s way, blocking pathways unless it can be moved.

The Spitting Tree. A stationary terrestrial enemy that spits fruity projectiles at our heroine. (Is that a demonic squirrel residing within? Who knows! I certainly don't.)

And last but not least, a ghostly disembodied head of the Diver. Who knew deep-sea diver helmets would make such great jack-o-lanterns!

It looks like Athena’s rogue gallery of enemies is quite menacing in its biodiversity. The only rational course of action: mercilessly eliminate all of them by violently hurling nautilus shells in their general direction. Obviously.

We’ll be posting more exciting things in the near future, so watch this space!
